Where’s the Creek ? (“The Long Journey to “Alleluias” edition)

Head north from the traffic light in Black Mountain, NC. In a few miles you will drive through the stone gate that announces, “MONTREAT!” This small town has been a destination of the Skelly’s since before Jane and I married. In fact, Jane’s family vacationed there since the 1930’s. It has been the focal point for Camps and Conferences for generations and is now a Town. Flat Rock Creek runs through Montreat.

Through the years “the creek” has provided plentiful opportunity for a favorite summertime activity: “rock hopping”. Children, youth and adults have been rock hopping for years. Sometimes the journey ends at the “Huckleberry” (a small grille) which just happens to serve Biltmore Ice Cream. Yum!

The Lenten Season approaches. Ash Wednesday is February 10th. We will share in a Service of Worship the evening of the 10th. This gathering will mark the beginning of our “rock hopping” our way through Lent towards Holy Week with the Imposition of Ashes. Each Sunday will mark one step along the way. At each step we will feel the building tension between Jesus and those who wish his salvation project to fail. They just don’t see Jesus as the one from God! He knows what lies ahead and yet the “wondrous love” of God leads him on.

And we follow. Rock to rock.

When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. (Luke 9:51)
